Our Legacy

A chapter built on service

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University. Their first public act was to march in the Women's Suffrage Procession in Washington, D.C. — a commitment to public service that has defined the organization ever since.

The East Harris Chambers Liberty County Alumnae Chapter carries that legacy into the communities of east Harris County, Chambers County and Liberty County. Our sorors are educators, nurses, engineers, business owners and public servants who give their time to programs that strengthen families across the region.

The East Harris Chambers Liberty County Alumnae Chapter was chartered on March 30, 2019, as the 1,050th chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, within the Southwest Region, under the leadership of Regional Director Michelle Brown and National President & CEO Beverly Smith. Ninety-five college-educated women committed to establishing the chapter to serve residents across Harris, Chambers, and Liberty counties.

Mission

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an organization of college-educated women committed to the constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black community.

Vision

A tri-county community in which every woman and girl has the education, health, and economic footing she needs to thrive — and the civic voice to protect it.

Commitment

Sustained, measurable service: scholarships awarded every year, health screenings brought into the neighborhood, and financial education offered free to the public.

National Affiliation

Part of a global sisterhood

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world.

The sorority has more than 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters across the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, West Africa, Southern Africa, the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Korea.

More than 10,000 members typically attend the biennial national convention. During the Centennial Celebration — the 51st National Convention in Washington, D.C. — more than 38,000 members registered and attended.
